Butter vs. Olive Oil

by stacie on March 8, 2021

I cook. A lot.

And I bake a lot, too.

Which means I’m equal parts butter and olive oil. And I also happen to love coconut oil, but we won’t get into that right now.

However, I’m from a looong line of butter lovers. Say the words “olive oil” in my grandmother’s presence and she’s likely to confiscate the family cookbook. Seriously. She’s all about the butter.

And she swears it’s better for you than “any kind of oil.” Well, she’s right…at least in part.

Between the two, olive oil is healthier for you than butter because it’s rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. That translates into lower bad cholesterol and more good cholesterol. But you can’t really spread olive oil on your morning toast, can you? Well, I guess you could, but that would be kind of icky. So butter does have a place, too.

It also happens to work much better in baked goods. But even all that buttery goodness comes with a price: saturated fat, which means bad cholesterol.

So does one really beat out the other? In my head, no. In my doctor’s head, yes. And I’ll tell you exactly what she told me. “You want butter on your toast? Fine. Butter your toast. You want butter on your pasta? Not so much. Oh, and the bread and butter you’re going to tell me that you want with your pasta? Skip it entirely.”

I tend to use butter or Smart Balance for baking and oil for cooking.

We have come to love olive oil for almost everything….but toast, you’re right. I infuse my oil with garlic and rosemary and we all enjoy dipping bread in it!

Well, I come from a long line of Southern women. I can’t help but love butter….in moderation, of course. I use olive oil for pastas and roasting veggies though!

We do a little of both- definitely real butter over anything fake!
