Moms Night In: Bunco

by Nicole Hempeck on April 19, 2021

I talked recently about how quality time with the girls is a must because we all need time away from the kids and an opportunity to let our hair down, but sometimes a night out isn’t really what we’re looking for, and a night in is just the ticket.

So why not play a little Bunco?

The beauty of Bunco is, it lends itself to conversation in that it’s extremely simple and it does not require strategy. It is a game that is based on pure luck - roll the dice, sip your wine and see what happens!

How It Works:

  • 12 women play
  • Players are seated at three different tables of 4. The four players are then paired up and pairs must sit across from one another at the table.
  • There is a “head” table which rings the bell for each of the rounds, keeping the game pace on track.
  • Each table goes through a series of rolling three dice for 1′s, 2′s, 3′s etc.. to tally up points. There are varying rules for when this equates a tally of 1 point, 5 points and a BUNCO! 21 points.
  • If, for some reason, there aren’t enough players (say you have 11) then one person will play with a “ghost”  - meaning the person will roll for themselves and for their ghost partner. The person playing with a ghost will change as people rotate tables.
  • People rotate tables according to who wins the rounds until a team gets to 21 points - at which point the game ends.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • It’s a simple dice game where you can sip wine, have conversation and enjoy some much needed down time.
  • You can win fun prizes and money depending on the variation that you and your group decide upon.
  • It’s an excuse to get out of the house or to have the girls over for an evening once a month (or however often you choose).
  • You can theme each get together and have gifts and even outfits that match, which can make it more fun, OR do nothing of the sort and keep it completely simple.
  • Above all things, it allows you to let go of the normal, everyday routine of life and enjoy some down time with your gal pals. SCORE!

Girls Night In should be varied, fun and minimal stress - Bunco is a fantastic way to make that happen on a regular basis.

Do you have a regular monthly get together with girlfriends? Would you play Bunco?

I just played for the first time with my moms group. It was a lot of fun. I didn’t know what to expect and it turned out to be great!

I just started playing Bunco with a group of girls recently and it really is something I look forward to! I still haven’t won anything yet, though!

I gave Bunco a try after seeing it on The Real Housewives of Orange County. I really like the game and you can play with both men and women. However, when it come to just the girls, my gangs favorite game is What’s a Dame to do? We TRY to play a couple of time a month and call it Dame Game Night. We always have a blast and it’s great to play with new and old friends. There’s even a short video on how to play on their website gamesfordames.com which really helps the first time you play.
