When In Doubt, Throw It Out

by kate on January 4, 2021

Did you know that organizing is among the most often made - and probably broken :( - New Year’s resolutions? It certainly feels true when I talk to my mom or sister. It seems like all of us want to weed out. Clean up. Get a fresh start.

How about you?

And, I kid you not, even my 2-year-old is feeling the sorting need. Yesterday when I was trying to corral her for bath time she held up her hand and said, “No. I’m organizing.” Which, for a 2-year-old comes out more like, “No. I or-nice-ging.”

As I face my own closet, I’m keeping these tips from Joy Mangano (of the Home Shopping Network) in mind:

· Be ruthless. Grab a trash bag and weed out any fashion mistakes, garments that are irreparably damaged or anything you haven’t worn in two years or more.

· Give stuff away – and feel good. Earmark still-serviceable rejects for pals or charity; kick the rest to the curb.

· Think beyond the closet. Could you move coats to a standing rack? Off-season clothes to bins under the bed or into cute boxes stacked in a corner?

· Triple your hanging opps. Swap out a mishmash of hangers for a set of super slim Huggable Hangers. Their velvety covers prevent clothes from slipping off onto the floor.

· Categorize. Make your favorite pieces easy to find by grouping like items together (long-sleeved shirts, dresses, jackets). That way, you can just grab what you need and go.

It’s not rocket science, but it does take time and determination. And a voice of reason.

So go forth. Conquer your closet!

Oh, and if you feel like you need more than just hangers, check out the Container Store. I got their circular in the mail (yes, the real mail!) and it convinced me to hit the store for some bins and boxes and much, much more. I know, I’m one of the reasons we all get peppered with so much junk mail which we all hate. But…sometimes, they actually DO have good information, don’t you think?

I love the hangers from the dry cleaning, because they don`t take a lot of room in your closet and you know how they put the special foam so your clothes won`t fall out. It`s my way to save on hangers.

@Villy - do you know that I used to take the foam off of those dry cleaner hangers and try to make it fit onto nice wooden hangers? It was such a waisted effort! I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? That said, I’m loving these Huggable Hangers, I really am. And, the best thing about them is that when I look in the closet, everything appears to be more organized just because the hangers are uniform. Small thing. But a good thing. For me anyway. Thanks for the reminder that sometimes it’s good to leave well enough alone, tho.
